Nestled in the heart of South Jersey, tucked away on a couple cozy acres, we raise all kinds of chickens, but began specializing in raising Ayam Cemani chickens, a breed as extraordinary as the folklore that surrounds them.
Back in 2021, my partner and I were lucky enough to escape the bustle of the crowded city and settle into our little slice of paradise. At first, the focus was getting the new house in order, but it didn’t take long before farming became a passion. Fast forward to today, and we’re now the proud caretakers of three doggos, over 40 chickens, some goats, a fluctuating number of rabbits, and an abundance of wildlife.
My journey into breeding Ayam Cemani chickens started with a serendipitous discovery. After our first few additions of chicks into my flock, I stumbled upon the Ayam Cemani! The “mysterious” and striking breed that my goblin-core witchy aesthetic heart just had to have! However, sourcing Ayam Cemani chickens in the Northeast turned out to be more challenging (and expensive) than I had imagined.
The most affordable option was ordering hatching eggs from NPIP-certified farms in the South, and shipping eggs such a long distance proved problematic. The other option up here was buying Ayam Cemani for HUNDREDS if not a THOUSAND dollars EACH! So, ordering multiple hatching eggs from NPIP-certified locations was my only choice. Hatch rates were low, and it took purchasing from multiple farms over the course of a year to finally establish my flock. It was a labor of love, but it was worth every effort.
Now that I’ve cultivated my own flock of Ayam Cemani, I’m thrilled to share this incredible breed with others. Having tested my own hatch rates, I discovered that the long travel distances were the main culprit behind my earlier struggles. By offering locally sourced, reasonably priced eggs from my flock, I’m making it easier for chicken enthusiasts in the Northeast to bring these remarkable (and hardy) birds into their own coops.
At The Witch's Coop, every egg is handled with care and shipped promptly to ensure the best possible hatch rates. Each order includes a couple of extra eggs—a small token of goodwill to help make your hatching experience a success. It may take a few days for your order to ship, and this is to ensure that your eggs are as close to the same age as possible!
This isn’t just a business; it’s a way to share my journey, my passion, and a little bit of magic with you. So whether you're a seasoned chicken enthusiast or just starting your journey, The Witch's Coop is here to inspire, educate, and provide.
